Digital Photography and Imaging - Week 05

Week 05 - 8.5.2023

LECTURE

Fig 1.1. Camera, Week 5 (8.5.2023)
The main parts of a camera:
1. Camera Body (shutter, image sensor, LCD screen)
2. Camera Lens (Aperture / Iris)

Exposure
  • the amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film
Fig 1.2. Exposure, Week 5 (8.5.2023)
  • Exposure Settings:aperture, shutter speed, ISO
1. Iris / Aperture
  • controls the flow of light entering the lens
  • measured by f-stop, indicated by sequence of f-number: f/1, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6...
  • the lower the f-number, the larger the lens is opening
Fig 1.3. Iris, Week 5 (8.5.2023)
2. Shutter
  • a small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film or prevent light from reaching the film

  • measured in seconds: 1/1000 s, 1/500 s, 1/250 s, 1/125 s, 1/60 s, 1/30s…
Fig 1.4. Shutter, Week 5 (8.5.2023)
3. ISO
  • Originally referred to the sensitivity of film - it's "light gathering" ability, now refers to the sensitivity - the signal gain of the camera's sensor

Fig 1.5. ISO, Week 5 (8.5.2023)
  • common ISO camera settings: 100, 200, 400, 640, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400….
  • the lower the number, the sensitive to light the camera is, and the finer the grain is
Lens
  • Wide Angle Lens
    • ideal to fit a large area
    • useful for landscape / street photography
  • Standard Lens
    • represent human sight
    • perceived as more natural than those taken with other types of lens
  • Tele Lens
    • isolate far away subject
  • provide desire framing
  • affects angle of view
Fig1.6. Types of Camera Lens, Week 5 (8.5.2023)
  • Focal Length
    • the measurement (in mm) from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera’s sensor

    • the shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and vice-versa
Fig 1.7. Focal Length, Week 5 (8.5.2023)
  • Depth of Field
    • the proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus
    • the smaller the aperture you use, the greater the depth of field

PRACTICAL

Digital Imaging Exercise 1: Photo Manipulation
In this exercise, we are practicing composing two image into a final outcome. Mr. Fauzi briefly leaded us for this exercise, then we started doing it by ourselves.

Part 1: Hearst Mansion
We are composing the Hearst Mansion and the superhero Shazam together.

Part 2: Our own photo version
We are replacing Shazam to ourselves.
