Digital Imaging Exercise 1: Photo Manipulation

In this exercise, we are practicing composing two image into a final outcome. Mr. Fauzi briefly leaded us for this exercise, then we started doing it by ourselves.

Part 1: Hearst Mansion
We are composing the Hearst Mansion and the superhero Shazam together.

Part 2: Our own photo version
We are replacing Shazam to ourselves.

Digital Imaging Exercise 2: Recolouring
This exercise aims to familiarise the Quick Selection Tool (W) and Brush Tool (B). We practiced recolouring two black and white images.

Part 1
In the first part of this exercise, I found it quite simple and fun to use the Brush Tool. Then I was struggling a while for the Quick Selection Tool because it keep selecting the other part. What I found out is I can hold Option key to adjust the selection path.

Part 2
Next, we are practicing to 'transfer' colours. We extract the main colour tone from an image and brush it to another.
We were given images below, using the left's hair colour, and the right's skin colour, recolouring it to Fig 2.2.2.

The toughest thing for me is selecting the hair to create clipping mask. There's still many minor space between them that makes it unnatural.

Exercise 2
We are using our own photo to practice double exposure. Here are some image that I found online for my following exercise.

Task Requirements:
1. Use your own portrait photo.
2. Image size: 1920x1080px or 1080x1920px

Project 2B: Poster Design
1. Research
Before starting my work, I Google searched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to get more trustworthy informations.
Fig 4.1. SDG, Week 6 (21.5.2023)
I got some indistinct ideas for Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation so I was researching more about it. This goal aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Shortage of water and sanitation is causing unnecessary disease and death. If we provide affordable equipment and education in hygiene practices, we can stop this senseless suffering and loss of life.

Targets of Goal 6:
1. SAFE AND AFFORDABLE DRINKING WATER
2. END OPEN DEFECATION AND PROVIDE ACCESS TO SANITATION AND HYGIENE
3. IMPROVE WATER QUALITY, WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND SAFE REUSE
4. INCREASE WATER-USE EFFICIENCY AND ENSURE FRESHWATER SUPPLIES
5. IMPLEMENT INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
6. PROTECT AND RESTORE WATER-RELATED ECOSYSTEMS
7. EXPAND WATER AND SANITATION SUPPORT TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
8. SUPPORT LOCAL ENGAGEMENT IN WATER AND SANITATION MANAGEMENT

3. Work Out
The first problem I encountered is the tiger looks abrupt in the cup. I tried to brush dark green shadows on it to blend it with the background and it looks much better. Next, the slogan, I intended to apply it to a movieish effect. I tried to use blue for the words before but they did not get along well, so I changed it to green.

The Poster: 1000 Posters by Toulouse Lautrec

This book contains 1000 digital imaging posters. Here are some of my favourite:
#1
As the theme is Sport Design, this poster features dynamic and action-packed visual effect which is related with sport. Also, the designer used vibrant and energetic colours to evoke excitement and passion.

#2

This two are a quite simple but effective one. It uses the double exposure which we were learning in this project.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
It is interesting for the exercises, I tend to practice and profit from the tutorial videos, which helps me master on various skills. For the poster task, I actually felt stressed because there is another same topic poster that I have to come out in IVN module. I feel like I couldn't figure out good creative ideas anymore. I was afraid of myself plagiarising other's work accidentally while looking at their outcome. However, this project allows me to revise some techniques which have been taught before, and attempt to provoke emotions on my own artwork for the first time.

Observation
I observed that I will have a long learning journey for the Quick Selection Tool. (Refer to Fig 1.2.7) I realised that there is a lot of flaw between the background and her hair. I couldn't solve it out with my capability in this time. But I do have a word for my future self: Patience is key!

Findings
It is important to keep revising the tools' functions and ways to use it on Photoshop. I observed that I will keep looking for the previous tutorial videos when I was doing the poster. I have to memorise it with keep practicing them.
