PRACTICALS

Project 2 - Maybank MyTIGER Art Competition
We are participating in the MyTIGER Values Art Competition 2023. We aim to provide illustration poster that promotes the 12 goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that proposed by United Nations.
The 12 goals are:
  • No Poverty
  • Zero Hunger
  • Good Health and Well-being
  • Quality Education
  • Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Affordable and Clean Energy
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • Responsible Consumption and Production
  • Climate Action
  • Life on Land
  • Life Below Water

At first, I started researching the SDG. I briefly learned this before at high school, now I'm going more detailed with them. I believe that to come out an effective poster, first I have to know what am I dealing with.

I decided to go with the second goal - Zero Hunger.
Then I came out with three slogans:
1. From Hunger to Hope
2. Fight Hunger, Build Future.
3. Share what you got.

#1 From Hunger to Hope.
I Google searched some illustration poster to inspire my ideas. I have attached my reference below. It has a goat on it so I was thinking to replace it with a tiger because it represents Maybank, iconically. Then for the mountains behind, I will let it be some huge food, like one of the scene in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Fig 2.1.3 shows my final outcome for #1. Instead of putting donuts or marshmallows, I prefer putting 'healthier' food like rice, nuts, fruits and vegetables because I think that's what people who is starving really needs - nutrition.

#2 Fight Hunger, Build Future.
For #2, I was just visualising more on the word 'fight'. I draw the tiger bigger to emphasise that we will hit the Zero-hunger goal one day in the future.

#3 Share what you got.
Because of the word 'share', I decided to divide a burger to express it. It's a little too blank behind it so I drew a tiger to fill it up. Then I realised the tiger played an unnecessary role because it doesn't express any meaning. Then I tried to go with two sharing hands.
After some self-reflections, I deleted the hands because I think it is messing the whole image frame. I replaced it with some bread crumps.

REFLECTIONS

It was exhausting for working on a whole poster for the first time myself. I had so much ideas but none of them are working out. I looked at the past participants' works, they are all so amazing that I almost doubt myself for being a design student. I wonder how do they did that. I must work harder in my future study to achieve that.
I observed that I can learn anytime, anywhere, even when I was strolling my TikTok. It recommends many useful videos for Illustrator tools, and how to come out with great designs.

Fig 3.1. Creative Character Design by Bryan Tillman
This book is recommend by the lecturer for supporting to our module. I read Chapter 3: The Most Important Part of Character Design. The most important part of creating a creative character is story and storytelling. Understanding the background, personality, and role of the character helps to design a character with spirituality.
