LECTURES
Lecture 6: Light and Shadow
In week 9, we are learning the chiaroscuro. It defines the treatment of
light and shade in a drawing or painting, which is an effect of
contrasted light and shadows.
Lecture 7: Ornaments
In the first exercise, we are using a hexagon to create patterns. We
multiplied it and fill in with colours.
Then, we practiced to change the pattern of the object given.
Lecture 8: Storytelling Basics
Three-Acts Structure
![]() |
Changing Patterns |
- Theme: The main idea or underlying meaning of the story
- Major theme: An idea that is intertwined and repeated throughout the whole narrative
- Minor theme: An idea that appears subtly and doesn't necessarily repeat
- Conflict: Elements that make a story interesting and creates tension and build suspense
- Characters
- Central Characters: Vital to the story's development. Plot revolves around them.
- Protagonist: Main character of a story
- Antagonist: Oppose protagonists

Three-Acts Structure |
1. Setup: The world where protagonist existed before starting his journey.
2. Rising Tension: The series of obstacles the protagonist must overcome.
3. Conflict: The highest tension and the major turning point of the protagonist.
Resolution: The conflict's conclusion.
INSTRUCTIONS
PRACTICALS
1. Story Choosing
We were given the link above to choose one story from it. Story chosen
will be the main theme of the digital triptych. Triptych is an ancient Roman writing tablet with three waxed leaves hinged
together in early time. Nowadays, it refers to picture (such as an
altarpiece) or carving in three panels side by side or something
composed or presented in three parts or sections.
I have chosen the story Eleonora.
After reading it, I broke down the story into 3-Acts: Setup, Conflict,
Resolution.
Central character: Eleonora and 'me'.
A) Setup
Eleonora, whom I loved in youth and I were sitting beneath the serpent-like trees, in each other’s embrace, watching the River of Silence. Everything was changing. Strange, star-shaped flowers bloomed out, the tints of green carpet was deepened. Ten times of ruby-red asphodels taken places of the white daisies. Flamingos and glowing birds flaunted their scarlet plumage before us happily. Golden and silver fishes haunted the river. Their lulling melody are holier than the harps of the Aeolians. Voluminous cloud, gorgeous in crimson and gold floated out, until its edges rested upon the tops of mountains.
B) Conflict
Eleonora died. The star-shaped flowers appeared no more. The green carpet faded; asphodels were replaced by dark, eye-like violets. The bird flew away sadly from the vale to the hills. Fishes swam down the river and never bedecked it again, utterly returned to its original silence. The clouds abandoned the tops of mountains, took away all its gorgeous glory. I found myself in a strange city, standing aghast at the burning thoughts which possessed, at the terrible temptations which beset me.
C) Resolution
I wedded. Once again in a silent night, there came through my lattice the soft sighs which had forsaken me, saying “Sleep in peace!”
2. Sketches
According to the 3-Acts above, we were required to sketch out three
panels to express each act. I can't draw well, I have to look for
reference and have a rough drawing. I took down some notes for each
scene (will be attached below).
A) Setup
The struggling part of Act 1 for me is the serpent-like tree. As
it was imagined, I was afraid that what I drew does not conform to what
the author wanted to express. I can only try my best with what I found
online.
B) Conflict
Eleonora dies. The first thing came up to my mind is a grim reaper's
hand reaching to her.
The three things that got author trapped after going a new
city:
1. pomps and pageantries of a stately court; 2. mad clanger of
arms; 3. radiant loveliness of women.
C) Resolution

It was much easier for the last scene because it only took a small part
in the story.

3. Digitalisation
A) Setup
I decided to change Eleonora and 'I' from sitting to standing because
it's more balancing in the whole image.

for stylistic enhancement.

B) Conflict
After the consultation hours, I changed the grim reaper's hand and
Eleonora to ghost Eleonora.

REFLECTIONS
It was a huge progress with these thousands of brush strokes. I was satisfied with my effort on this project. The next step I want to go on is to develop my skills on its lighting, and I wish I could draw out something myself without tracing others work one day soon in the future.

AI: Classroom in a Book |
There isn't a lecture class that specifically talk about the Brush tool. I found this book surprisingly including all the basic tools in AI. I read the brush part only because the main tool that I will use frequently in this part is brush.
Table of Contents |
The one thing I have learned new about Brush tool is creating my own brush into the brush panel. It saves a lot of time for the flower part in my Act-3 panel.
